Date and Tamarind Chutney

With work and home, life gets super busy. We tend to get away from the basics, and switch to more processed food which is quick to buy and use. Little do we realize that a jar of food that we pick up from the store is really easy to make and store at home.

At my mom's, we always made fresh chutney for bhel, pani puri or samosas. Although I never buy coriander or garlic chutney, Deep food's delicious date and tamarind chutney is something I cannot resist. This time too, I was about to pick two bottles from the refrigerator, and add to my cart. Suddenly, I saw the label with the price stamped on it. Oh my, $3.99 for each bottle! This moment was an eye opener. I had a pack of dates in my fridge, why was I not making my own, fresh chutney? I had no answer to the question, but to make a big batch and post it here. Believe me, it is so easy to make, and does not take more than 15 minutes.

Soft dates, press and get the pit off.

Add 1/2 cup of water and cook for 4-5 minutes till the water boils and dates get soft and mushy.

Tamarind pulp, I love the Splitz tamarind pulp which is natural with no added ingredients. This is super sour, just like tamarind pulp should be. I have used other brands too from an Indian store. Most of them contain tamarind and corn syrup.

To 1 cup cooked and cooled dates, add 1 tbsp tamarind pulp, salt, chilli powder, and cumin powder.
Add sugar if needed. Grind ingredients well to form a smooth paste. Refrigerate and use when needed as is or dilute with little water.

    1. From any Indian store. But, you would want to check the ingredients on it. I like the pure one.
